The holidays with family is full of good food and even better company. My experiences during the holidays includes your typical southern staples including but not limited to country ham, potato salad, green beans, deviled eggs, mashed and sweet potatoes, and the list goes on and on.
But what I am going to get to is what made my family’s holiday get-togethers so unique and special to me.
I have many cousins. We have all been close since from when I can remember. We are all close in age and very good friends also.
My family is full of cookers and culinary geniuses. Well in my opinion.
There always those certain dishes that are always at family gatherings.
There is always some kind of ham. Either country (almost always) or honey baked ham at Christmas. There is always some kind of potato dish like potato salad, mashed potatoes, and sweet potatoes. There will always be green beans and some sort of dinner roll.
Desserts are usually one of the first things inspected on the island in my grand mothers kitchen. We will always have some kind of chocolate cake, brownies, or pie. And then one of my aunts will make their experimental dessert of the occasion that they found on Pinterest.
However when we gather for Christmas we traditionally have breakfast. My grandmother being the sweet caring women she is makes bacon, sausage, and biscuits. She really does go above and beyond to serve and feed our family during our gatherings.
But the holidays are not the only instances that we get together. It has become tradition that on mother’s and father’s day we order Famous Dave’s and just spend the afternoon just visiting with everyone. We occasionally do the same whenever my grandparents birthday’s roll around. Now I am not saying that whatever we food that we have makes the experience, but it does help.
